You should analyse the competition when formulating your stock picking strategies.
Look at the characteristics of a company’s industry and growth potential. A middling company in a great industry could provide a solid return, while a middling company in a poor industry will not do as well.

If the market is making new highs it may be better to sit it out until prices lower but if the market is down it could be the time to make those long term investments. Over the long-term, dividends can provide upwards of 40% of the return from stocks so select companies that have a good record of increasing their dividend payouts.
